Book Scream isn't a fantastic site, but for now it is still a free place where you can submit your books for promotion. That's something that can be incredibly hard to find for indie authors in this day and age, because everyone wants money for their services.
When you get down to it, though, it's not hard to to believe that people want something in return. After all, if their results are worthwhile, then making their services pay to enter would help with supply and demand to make sure they aren't overloaded with submissions.
All in all, Book Scream isn't one of my first choices for a site if I want to move a lot of copies of a book, but it's not a bad site if I'm trying to supplement a sale or want to push my book and name out as far as I can.
Requirements: They don't really have any major requirements for inclusion in their site which is a plus for newcomers to the industry. That being said, if you don't have an amazing book cover and blurb it still probably isn't worth your time. Basically, you submit your book, and if they can fit it into their newsletter it automatically updates on the site to let you know when it will be featured.
My Experiences: Their results are alright, but nothing too extreme. I've used them about a dozen times, because their system is really easy to submit through. Once you have loaded a book one time then setting up a new deal is as simple as accepting it and adding a new promotion.
The problem is, they don't really get huge results. Not all email lists are created equally, and there's doesn't seem to be very responsive. I've promoted thrillers, horror, urban fantasy, and literary fiction through them with limited results each time. Who knows, maybe Romance is the genre of choice, but I haven't seen any 'niche' that gets good traction.
They feature just about every book sent their way, which could be part of the problem. If they don't have an editorial staff look through and make sure the things they put in their newsletter are worthwhile, then readers will lose faith. They don't like to get burned by bad books, and in general Book Scream seems more interested in filling up their newsletter and putting large numbers in their 'save x amount today!' header than they do in finding quality content for their readers.
My Rating: I can only give this one a three star rating, even with them being free, because their results have been so limited. It can help get your name out there, but in general I would expect a service to have an audience that is interested in buying books, and that doesn't seem to be the case here.
They also overload their emails with too much stuff, which is another downside. I think that free books could do well with a service like this, but if you have a paid book you are trying to promote then you might want to look elsewhere.
